Winamp
is a popular, free, skinnable media player that plays a wide variety of
audio formats, including cd audio, .wav, mp3, midi, and mod
files. Besides the fact that it's free, I like how it can be
minimized, its handling of playlists, and its configurability.
Some mod fans have noted that Winamp's mod playing is imperfect, but
I've only noticed problems with very few mod files--it seems to handle
most of them just fine. I also like the compression plug-in,
which is very useful for levelling out the relative volumes between
different songs, whose volume levels can vary considerably depending
upon the source of the music file. I also can't say that I like the default skin that Winamp comes with, but there are literally thousands of skins available for download, at least for version 2, but I'm sure the number of version 3 skins are increasing, as well. There are many interesting skins, but I think a lot of them are too distracting for actual use, especially if you use Winamp to play music while you're working on other stuff on the computer. I created a few, basic, high-contrast skins of my own, but only the one below is completely-skinned; the others are in various stages of incompletion, although they serve my own needs fairly well. I'm not sure that I'll do a skin for Winamp version 3. |

SnafuAmp BlueThis is a skin of my own design for Winamp 2. It was intended to be a very basic, high-contrast scheme that would be easy to read and work with, even when minimized. It can be downloaded here. Here's a screenshot, so you can see what it looks like: ![]() Personally, I never use the built-in browser. Let me know if you like the skin. |
